Phoenix comic con was great Good people. We announced the H?onky Tonk Man book do out in two months as well as startedplotting the course for next years shows.
Also got one of my drawings signed by stan lee for one of my customers, plus the awesome chuckle after I drew stan on his soap box.

So here's the deal people, We've gone from Long Beach to Anneheim to Corpus Christi, and all the way BACK to Phoenix for the Phoenix Comic Con. Its been crazy. Its been GREAT. and now at the end of the road people want to start throwing things in our way. Well it ain't happenin'!!!

the People have spoken and have pushed for us to shine through on the last leg of this tour. This is last show before issue 1 comes out. we will be during a tour throughout the Phoenix Area at different shops in celebration of the book. I'll keep you posted for the dates.

I don't think I'm in the same league as any of these other artists, but I do have to say that there is an admiration for his work ethic that I could relate to. One of those being that rising to the challenge attitude. My parents bought me this dvd on Frazetta from discovery channel I believe. I urge people to get it. He really had that attitude of he could do anything....or even better...don't tell him what he can't do. His work was/is powerful. He was a something.

The passing of Frank Frazetta is like the passing of a hero, who turns to challenge you and say "Get the Hell out here onto the field! If I can do it, you can do it! Damn you!"

But none of us could "do it" like Frank Frazetta.

He'll be missed because he was unique, and no one will ever fill his shoes.

All the rest of us can do is try.

To me, Frank was not only a founding father of comic book art, but the founding father of the modern fantasy art genre. Any time I look at a Frazetta piece, I discover something new that I hadn’t seen in the prior 1000 times I had looked at it before. And he made it all seem so effortless.

We are all very lucky for his talent, not only to the artists that he influenced and inspired, but for the many fans that were appreciative and touched by his works

I've had Frazetta's work close to my drawing table for many years, and I always try to soak up a small part of the power he put into every image he ever drew. He was a lightning bolt of creativity and dynamic power in a field of mostly static, posed, photo traced work. Nobody ever had to explain the appeal of Frank's work to anyone. It reaches out and grabs you the minute you lay eyes on it, and makes you want more. He transcended his medium and influenced everything from comic books to music to movies and books. In an era when fine art consisted of mindlessly splattering canvasses and proving inane intellectual points, Frank Frazetta was showing that painting had more vitality than it ever had before.

Mike Deodato Jr.
The movement and energy of his drawings are unparallel until today, and it made a big impact on comics. He was also the finest draftsman who has ever lived, and his ability to imply textures using ink is incomparable. I was heavily influenced by him as everyone else. Every time I draw something organic, like plants, dinosaurs, warriors, and so forth, I go after his work for inspiration. That was a great loss. There will never be another Frazetta.

I said I was going to be great and great I will be. I had not painted in some time, for the simple reason of not being inspired to paint anything. That and I was busy on the EL MYSTICO book--(did I mention that the preview sold out).

FINALLY, I could not take it anymore. I wanted to paint but really no real urge.I started this painting on Wed. it was gone by Sat.

Now here i the part that is the kicker. I sad I would be great, that I would be a true killer. The persons who bought this piece have only one other painting in their home. It is by the OLD MASTERPIECE PAINTER CHAGALL. Now, they have mine.

The Theme: A simple girl. Not rich, whose only decoration is here dowry adorned on her neckline is a simple jewel on a satin ribbon. The poor use what they have, flowers and greenery to decorate the hair, a simple but notable dress, passed down.
We are what we make ourselves to be.

Long Beach was awesome!!!! You couldn't ask for a better show. ALL the books were sold out from my book EL MYSTICO. WE sold some shirts, a fan bought page one from the book. I also wanted to do something special for fans so we raffled off another page from the book - page 4, and one of the masks I wear for the book. ALL in ALL it was the best. We even got fan art on the second or third day of the show.

THE ROAD TO ........LONG BEACH???

I have to say that the anticipation for this book, is something of a surprise. Originally we posted about the book back in January I think, since then (like all things) life had another idea and through a monkey wrench in EVERYONE'S plans.

I'm happy to say that we are finally here and the response has been amazing. Unlike other artists, I'll sit in my shop and draw pages in the public's eye. Having people constantly asking what the book is about, when it'll be released, and really going over the pages in awe, is something that helps feed me creatively.

Rest assured that we are looking to really make this Long Beach show, something for fans and future fans. While Thomas posted that we would have shirts and what not, I'll also be raffling off some original art (from and for the book). Those images will be posted Friday (9-25-09).

Also come by Tuesday, and I'll be postng some images from the book that will be released at Long Beach. I'm eager to hear some response. SO all that being said, Thank you for the support and..................Let the show begin.

The worldwide financial collapse was a Sunday school picnic compared to this. Come August, civilization as we know it is coming to an end: Archie Andrews is getting married.

You read that right. After 68 years of keeping not one, but two high school hotties on a string, comics’ most successful player is getting hitched (even the supposedly invulnerable Superman succumbed to Cupid’s arrow and let Lois Lane drag him up the aisle back in 1996). Is nothing sacred?

The news leaked out Wednesday on the Internet and in the official source of all things relating to celebrity gossip, the New York Post, which ran the shocking story under the headline: “BETTY OR VERONICA? ASK ARCH”

Archie Comics’ official blog confirmed the epochal news, digging into its cache of exclamation marks to declare: “ARCHIE ANDREWS IS GETTING MARRIED!”

The blog continues: “The eternal love triangle is the cornerstone of Archie Comics for over 65 years — and the bane of Archie Andrews' existence! In fact, over the years it has not only defined the Betty/Archie/Veronica relationship, but has even threatened to dismantle it a time or 20.”

According to the blog, the six-part story of Archie’s long-delayed passage into adulthood will begin in Issue 600 of his eponymous comic book “Archie.” It will ship on Aug. 12 and be available in comics shops on Sept. 8.

In the story, Archie has finally graduated from Riverdale High School; in fact, he’s five years older and a college graduate. (We told you this was the apocalypse.) He may even have an actual job when he gets engaged.

But to whom? Will it be the elegant Veronica Lodge, daughter of wealth and privilege? Or will it be girl-next-door Betty Cooper?

Should Archie choose Betty or Veronica? Vote!

And who’s going to be best man? It can’t possibly be that wiseacre Reggie, can it? Our money is on Jughead, who still can’t lose that goofy hat he’s been wearing since Bob Montana first drew it on his tousled head way back in 1941.

The folks at Archie Comics aren’t saying. Instead, they’re offering their own list of questions:

“Now make way for this special story that takes a look at Archie and his friends after they graduate college! What careers will they seek? Will the friends stay in Riverdale or disperse? What would lead Archie to have marriage on his mind? And who would he choose, Veronica or Betty? How will Betty react? How will Veronica react?”

As for the redheaded hero himself, all he is saying on his own blog is: “Jughead thinks I should flip a coin to finally choose between Betty and Veronica. Do you think this is a good idea? –Arch.”

One thing we know for sure. If it’s Veronica, her rich daddy, Hiram Lodge, is going to have a fit. And he can afford a lot of legal help.

Writing the story for Archie Comics is comic book aficionado and movie producer Michael Uslan, who resurrected the Batman movie franchise in 1989. Longtime Archie Comics artist Stan Goldberg will illustrate the tale.

Free Comic Book Day

That was a lot of fun. I had a lot of people I did sketches for along with some friends that were doing sketches as well. I wanted to get there early to loosen up, seeing as I hardly get to draw that much cause I paint most of the time. Unfortunately I didn't get to, but it didn't matter. I was ON FIRE, every drawing I did was on point and the kids were loving it. It was a good day.

Twice in the same weekend. Looking forward to Free comic book day on Sat. 5-2-09. I'll be signing with Tony Parker, Daniel Bradford, Madame M, and Ben Glenndenning to name a few.

Once that's all done I'll be on my book, as well as concentrating on the paintings. I'llbe close to finished with commissions, this work will really be important and the aspects of the paintings will be once that you can't just simply walk away from. The thought that'll be running through my head while painting will be this:

"What do you think an artist is? An imbecile who has only eyes, if he is a painter, or ears if he is a musician, or a lyre in every chamber of his heart if he is a poet, or even, if he is a boxer, just his muscles? Far from it: at the same time, he is also a political being, constantly aware of the heartbreaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. How could it be possible to feel no interest in other people, and with a cool indifference to detach yourself from the very life which they bring to you so abundantly? No, painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war."

Been incredibly busy so much so that I haven't even wanted to talk to anyone. Like I literally have not even wanted to open my mouth. If i had to put a number on it, I'd say 11-15 paintings, STILL have not found that style I like for El Mystico, Running the gallery....its just insane....oh yeah and I'm moving into my new house on the 28th of this month. Cool news considering in January I was telling the writer for El Mystico, that "yeah I think I want to get a house this year". How the West was won...

Its been toooo long since I've posted. Work has had me so tied up that by the time I get home I'm exhausted and don't want to do much. I got a couple of El Mystico pages in my bag right now, as well as, ideas for the continuation of ANNIHILATION JONES. Somewhere in between all of this I'm going to a funeral this week, I went to the All-star Games this weekend in Phoenix,worked, worked, worked, and all that with still looking good. Fiction House is slating shows for San Diego and San Fransisco, of which I'll be apart of. San Diego can be a little tougher to get into so I might be even looking at an Artist Alley space. That would mean a sketch book is somewhere on the horizon? maybe? maybe not? We'll see what I can get done this week, as I'm packed with paint orders. Oh yeah the west was won, with hard tiring work.....and a beast from the east. Good looking bugger too.

HISTORY!!!

Starting the day was one that was busy and anxious. While the President was minutes away from his Inauguration, I was drawing comics. His speech, was something to listen to.

I favor no politics, but to watch him and his mannerisms....the man knows there is work to do. I have Hope. Hope for things that are in so many words...earnest. I have hope for my children. I have hope for their dreams. I have hope for my family. Vigilance was in his speech. Vigilance is something people need. Not only for themselves but for their family and for others and what is happening around them.

Those are two very strong words. Hope and Vigilance. If you could walk away from that speech and look at things differently, those would be two words to take with you.

Well Happy New Year for everyone. I hope it was somewhat decent. Mine definitely started out rough and moved on to incredibly busy. Probably one of the more recent and most important thing to come out of the year was the introduction and release of Annihilation Jones. Another project in talks is all in the header at the top of the page. Apparently I CAN'T put my brush down like I wanted to because I have too many people wanting work from me. Again a good thing. Okay so 60 days later, here we are. There has been a crazy amount of nerves and expectation for the announcement of Annihilation Jones' release date. Annihilation Jones is hitting the printer!!! I'm putting some of the painting away for a little while, to concentrate on not only Annihilation Jones but another high profile proposal. News on that soon. No worries you'll still see some paint, because its being incorporated into Annihilation Jones. So again the big announcement Annihilation Jones is hitting stands in January along with Jeff Pena's Dr. Oblivion, and we wiil both be appearing at Phoenix comic con in January. Special Thanks to all the people around this book for helping seeing it through and special thanks to Thomas Healy and his Fiction House Mafia for the invitation to the Phoenix Con. So I guess all that being said lets start this year off right, with Annihilation Jones and um.......just lead me to the promise land so we can burn it down. Its about time comics had something new to look forward to.

YES, I get to wake up at 4:00 in the morning!!! Its what I look forward to every year. Not Really. Seriously I can't wait for the end of the 60 days to be up. I might even let out some news sooner.

I did get an update on the Fantastic Four archives cards I did a couple of months back. I think at least one did get printed and I caught it on ebay for sale. It went from $2.50 to $102.50 in less than 24 hours. That was really cool that someone would have wanted my card that much. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of it, just cause I was an idiot and didn't think about it. I was too busy being excited about some printed Marvel work and it getting swooped up immediately. Very cool. Anyhow enjoy the holidays.

Atomic had a contest to color up some vinyl figures called Munnies. I wanted to do up something that I could possibly use for future development. I started doing up some sketches and came up with a character I've just been calling my "Surly Sailor".Its becomesomething I've been putting together more and more so I'll be puting up concept designs as well as the final profile. Also in two weeks you'll be seeing the first strip from the Surly Sailor, it'll be done in the traditional newspaper style type strip. So I have really been sick lately. Temperature over a hundred degrees, trouble breathing, and just completely aching. I stayed locked in a room for about three days ,not much TV because it bothered me, and just slept and thought. I had a lot of quiet time. Now I'm back in the swing of things and walking through Nordstrom's really just kind of gave a weird love/hate feeling. The smell of a woman's perfume can take you back to so many memories. Let's just say that some people should stay buried away where you don't think of them too much. Problem is sometimes I do, and then I just look away. On the other side of that I am working on another commission and it has to go along with this song or poem however you want to look at it.

I am very Honored to be asked to be doing this piece as I find a lot of truth in this piece. Here you go...In this song, Quixote explains his quest and the reasons behind it ... in doing so,
he captures the essence of the play and its philosophical underpinnings.
(For me, it is absolutely magical.)

Good exciting stuff coming out of the factory that is EMPIRE Artworks. Times being what they are and as slow as things are I continually stay busy so thank you all. I'v got a commission lined up that could possiby turn into two or three. Here are a couple of photos that I thought were the best to come out of the series. The piece will be a figurative nude, so not a portrait. More like the essence of the image if that makes sense. She wants a vertical image so the piece will stand 3 feet by 4 feet and the image will be the first picture seen. Enjoy

This is one of the pieces coming out of the studio this week. It's called Mellow Yellow, and after some slight adjustments on one panel the finish was applied. Each panel is 20x24 and can be hung horizontal or vertical, depending on the person.

Ripples to Waves

So I had a conversation with an older gentleman (art historian) who made some very valid points about the state of art. His view was simply "What is anyone actually doing to advance the history of art as we know it". We did see eye to eye on some things like propaganda as a selling point or where people really stood with there work. Either they were doing it more for commercialism (which I have and still am guilty of), there is always that fine line of political, are they doing it make a name for themselves (guilty), or they were the artist doing it for themselves or art's sake and letting chips fall where they may (again guilty). The thing was what was anyone really painting for? Valid points. There isn't anyone (at least that stands out) that is pushing some boundaries that the Da Vinci's or impressionists or the whoever were really doing. Pushing boundaries.

While I was listening, I waited and understood where he was coming from. To do the things this gentleman was talking about, to push the boundaries of what the art world is doing I simply responded "To do these things you're talking about an artist has to use every trick, every method, everything they know and be aware of the things around him as well." In simpler terms an artist has to recognize and understand the Socialism, Political ism, commercialism, the soul of the painting, and the consciousness of there being. They have to know these things and when I say consciousness of one's being, I mean what are you saying and where are you going.

It was a perfectly placed nail. Mind you I didn't pretend to know as much as this guy, but the fact that the statements were made in the conversation took it to new levels. That being said he shook my hand, asked my name, asked where to find myself and my work. It was a good deep conversation since I know alot of artists.

Along with that story I will be moving into a new home. Kollective Art and Design Gallery and I have been talking for about a month and have finally come down to the stretch this week. It will be the first gallery to carry my new work and a place for one to view my new studio as well. So I have gotten a lot of flak, because I don't really know which way to go with some of the comic stuff and the paintings. well I should say the paintings are coming out slower these days for a number of reasons.

1)more than one gallery wants my contemporary work
2)I'm looking to finish and push my figurative work
3)I have personal clientele that want nudes done

The comic stuff because some people see or feel that I have a slight advantage in having a door open. After the Fantastic Four, the question is do I want to pursue anything with Marvel, with the little fire that I have. YES. As a matter of fact I want to take it back and play with a flagship character. These characters are harder to play with because every kid and there mother wants to do them, and they consist of Spider-man, X-men, Wolverine, stuff like that.

If I'm doing this I'm not going in completely unawares or alone. Brandon Huigens will be scripting out the pages and we'll be sitting down plotting the thing out together (mostly him probably). I've always felt there was a magic that is there with his writing and our communication on and off the page. The way I look at it if you're going to play, play with every card you got. Peace.

My first Marvel comics work in conjunction with Rittenhouse publishing and the Hero Initiative. It was alot of fun and a little nerve racking at first but after the first couple of images and a warm-up, I can say they came came out pretty good-- I found a comfortable groove. I'm pretty sure they're sending over better images of the cards but this was sent to over to me first. Countdown and Lock Down

I have till tomorrow at 12:00 pm to finish these paintings for the Benefit in Phoenix, and thanks to my scheduling difficulties and last minute changes to my line up (I literally changed all the paintings I was going to do for the thing yesterday), I am not even close to being done. So I have a self imposed Lock down on myself and the tolerance of a pissed off bull. We'll see if I finish or if the images come out the way I want them to. I'm allowed two paintings in the benefit, buuuut I'm trying to squeeze three in. If not oh well, I've got one more thing for some other galleries looking in my direction. Show you guys tomorrow.

I have had some amazing luck with running into different circles and making new friends interested in my career. Wednesday 9-3-08, I will be in Mesa doing work for Marvel Comics on Exclusive Fantastic Four sketch cards brought to you by Atomic comics. Thank you to those guys for remembering me and choosing me as one of the artists. Yes it is the Fantastic Four from the movies.

Another big deal is that I'm looking at a new studio in the Phoenix Art district, which is connected to a gallery called Kollectiv Art and Design. I also have to say thanks to Moises and Jason Rudolph Pena for helping me further my standing with the art. Peace-

This is something I came across just today, Carlos Meglia ,another one of the artists I continually looked at for inspiration has passed on last night. This one is a little closer because I admired and studied his work so much that a couple of weeks back I distinctly remember hunting down some books from him and asked Alberto Ruiz if he had plans to get together with him and produce a sketch book. I saw pictures of him wearing a pair of Mickey Mouse ears in a picture, which is funny because the next day the Disney store was giving them out for free. I grabbed three pairs and ended up running around the whole night with my girls- all three of us with Mickey Mouse ears on. Thanks Carlos.

Carlos Meglia was well known and published international artist from south of the border, and really there isn't more to say other than goodbye...a damn shame I never got to meet you.....and the fact that these artists that haven fallen this last year gave themselves to there work, friends, and family and should at very least get some kind of silent moment,prayer, and thank you. ---I know it was a long sentence....fuck you.

I've been so put back with work and projects that I haven't really had time to really put anything down on my blog lately. Some of the biggest things that have come out of my scheduling is that I was invited to join an art group that focuses on the Latino arts. The group is called ALAC - Advocates for the Latino Arts and Culture. While its a bit intimidating being that I've never really worked with a big group of artists, a rather notable and respected group of veteran artists, its also very exciting and humbling. To think that a group like this is so inviting and wanting to work with you on something as big as this says a lot about the people and the "God willing" my work. The group is not only limited to paintings and such but also to theater, music, the movie industry, dance, and anything you can really think of when it comes to the arts. The first big project I will be taking on in the group will be a musical theater show. It will be in Peoria, AZ and will be a dinner then Broadway musical in Spanish and one night only in English. I'll have two substantial pieces up at the show that will be for sale. The benefit will be very exciting with all that they have planned. According to my assistant this is a big move towards what I want to accomplish with my work. The other big project that is closer to being locked in is a project for the Arizona Anti-Tobacco Bureau or something like that. They want me to come up with a strip that they will be airing TV commercials for in January and the strip I think runs January through June, thats an online strip too. So one can just go the website, on the other end of that they are wanting a 8-12 pg comic book for publishing. This stuff I have mixed feelings about only for the simple reason that its a lot easier to paint than to sit down and draw these days. ESPECIALLY when I have a lot of ideas I want to get out. Thats all from the front, hopefully there will be images to post on Monday. Until then, we at Empire will keep grinding them out, if you keep rockin' it out.

Dog Days Of Summer

Sorry it s been so long yadda,yadda,yadda. Just kidding. I've been on a non stop painting spree with a couple of hours of seepy time in between. The new news is that Annihilation Jones' preview did come out on Tues. 7-8-08. So for any of you keeping score at the beginning of the year I said I wanted to be published at least twice this year so that #1. The paintings I was going to post I haven't received images yet from the new owners. So I suppose I'll have to post the ones my assistant took to pass the time.

The new work hit last Friday with 4 new images last week. One of those was the result of someone seeing one of the original three and wanting something similar but different. I also have a new sports image I'll be putting out. I think I was almost done when I thought to myself that this wasn't the style I originally wanted to use, but it helps as a template so no love lost. I can say that the image is already sold and that I had a custom piece with four modern/contemporary women that is once again sold as well. HMMM.....I'd say thats a good problem to have. Making the killer once again the baddest man in the whole damn land......with the only one down side.

There are a lot of people digging on the new work so much that I have a hard time for other things. Good thing my girl understands, but I make time. This has more to do with the comics aspect of it all. Its been so busy that I might not even make it to San Diego due to the fact I have other work I want to put out---my European style as well as well we're not gonna say. The tickets being bought already I'm really wondering if I'm even supposed to draw comics anymore or if I found that road to greatness I was looking for. We'll see how things go between then and now. Sweet Dreams

Unfortunately it's with great sadness that I must inform everyone that Michael Turner tragically passed away last night, June 27th at approximately 10:42 pm in Santa Monica, Ca. Turner had been dealing with recent health complications arisen in the past few weeks.

Since his initial diagnosis in 2000, Turner had several ups and downs, but, surely thanks in part to his positive attitude, he was seen as the guy who was going to beat it, and be drawing for years to come - he just had to kick this thing first. Mike was 37.

Maduro y Bahia

A new piece I'm trying to come out with. These are the early stages and will be done in at least three different ways. One with more of a Wine red and a bold red called "Maduro". The other two will be more of in the blue tones in each, with the second version being slightly different. Both will be entitled "Bahia".

I was talking with a client one day and we were talking about names - how I came up with the names for some of my pieces. Its very important that I have a specific name for a piece, it helps me bring across the flavor, color, and mood of the painting. Much like following directions. Usually ,more times than not, in the past I would have the painting done before I name the piece. Sometimes I still do, but when the name comes first you can be sure that it will come out with a little extra something. After that its just a simple dance between me and the painting.....even though someone else is taking her home. Damn.

Alright finally got back on track and finished this three piece. The Indian blanket was pretty cool looking, we changed some colors for her changing it from the original. The colors we changed really pushed out the image and made me want to use some of the colors for another piece.

While its takin' me about a year to release any info on Annihilation Jones, there has recently been more of a problem (on my part) "visually" and maybe in some story telling areas. With the new "Hancock" movie coming out, there are certain areas of 'Jones that are just really rubbing me the wrong way. I think there are changes to be made and will do so here in the next we're gonna say month because of the fact I've got alot of paint work to run through.

Dealing with Jones and bringing him this far especially since the you guys haven't seen the visual yet has been fun and trying at best. Then deal with "Independents Day" was to have three winners to print in a book. Annihilation did not win due to the fact that I had completed about two fully finished pages compared to the winners who had about 4-6 pages completed. There work was awesome, and the styles were all different. The upside of the project was that I had already laid down an alternative to the day. I really wanted to see what people were working on, enjoy myself and draw, dish out and see what people's thoughts were for Annihilation, and lay some ground work for a series I'm pushing for with Marvel (debuts in San Diego for viewing). The feedback to Annihilation was awesome. People loved the pages and were really taken in by the look of the character. They wanted to see more and the decision was made to have a page from Annihilation Jones in the book even thought the story didn't win. That was great for me, at least it would kick out the Jones stuff and it would be a good starting point. This being said I won't be changing Annihilation drastically, but just enough to make me more comfortable.

Also this is an update, while Annihilation will make its debut in San Fransisco, I will unfortunately not be there to see it off. The writer will be however, as I will be getting ready to send off paintings to New York, and organizing a show in Phoenix.
The thing to understand is that I feel its more important to get the book done right rather than speed through it to make it to San Fransisco. Sorry.
